Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to associations with words. Ford was interested in the profession of acting in her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a month, she decided that it wasn't for her. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth application she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was recognized for her stand-up comedy that has been added to her portfolio in the year 1996.
